About the Documentary Series:
“Philadelphia: The Great Experiment” explores America’s first city from its pre-history and then across nearly four centuries, as the nation’s laboratory of ideas, a place of continuous innovation, exploration, and inquiry. The story of democracy, the Constitution, civil rights, religious freedom, and of pluralism originates in Philadelphia. By using Philadelphia as an outstanding example of the urban crucible, viewers will not only understand Philadelphia better, but will appreciate the meaning of being American more fully. By attaching the ideas of democracy, freedom, and tolerance to the specific location of Philadelphia, the viewer engages with four centuries of history, finding new ways to understand the challenges facing America and its cities today.

About the most recent episode:
The latest episode, which aired on June 20th on ABC 6, is titled “The Fight: 1965-1978" and tells the story behind the Columbia Avenue riots, Ali vs Fraser, and former Mayor Frank Rizzo. Sam Katz describes this episode by saying, “For Philadelphia, it was a time of distress-- factories closing, out of control crime, neighborhoods crumbling, rampant fear.  The city was at war with itself.  One man stood tall, larger than life.  Powerful, but divisive.  Frank Rizzo.  It was his city.  Or was it?”
