On May 15th, Young Involved Philadelphia (YIP) will be hosting a millennial Get Out the Vote (GOTV) Phone Bank from 6pm to 8pm at Engagement Studios. Once again, YIP will be providing food, drink, and just enough craft beer to keep you from slurring on the phone lines.
This phone bank will be dedicated to contacting millennial undervoters that live in Districts outside of Center City and did not vote in the last election. Held on the Friday before Election Day, we hope to encourage voters to think about their voices and choices before heading out to enjoy the nightlife of the very city the May election is affecting.
Local voting data shows that 70% of millennial aged voters are inactive, meaning they have not voted in the last 5 years. That same group of millennials make up 27% of Philadelphia’s population.
Did you know that Philadelphia voters aged 60 to 74 only make up 12% of the City’s population, yet they have more political pull in elections due to the number that actually show up to the polls?
What’s that old line about strength in numbers?
And do we want these older voices making the decisions for ourselves and the future leaders of tomorrow? Let’s decide for ourselves and show up to the polls.
