Thursday, April 16 2015 5:30 PM 7:30 PM EDT

ABOUT ABOUT

If you're new to Philly or looking to get more involved in your community, this is the happy hour for you.  Join Young Involved Philadelphia (YIP) and a selection of our partner organizations on the outdoor patio at City Tap House - University City for drink specials and lounging by their outdoor fire pits on Thursday, April 16.   This event is a chance to learn more about what's happening in Philly and how you can get plugged in.  Ticket price includes your first drink.

FLASH TALKS
Scattered through the 2-hour event there will be a call for anyone who has a project, upcoming event, or organization they want to share with the group to come up to the front of the room. In the interest of time, we can only take the the first 10 people/groups.  Each person or group will be given 1 minute to introduce and pitch their organization to the crowd.  After 10 minutes, networking and socializing will resume!

TABLING PARTNERS
A selection of YIP's partner organizations will be present at the event.  Stop by and say hello to the following groups who will be joining us this month:

Philadelphia Asian American Film & Filmmakers (PAAFF) is a volunteer run nonprofit organization founded in 2008 to educate and expose the Philadelphia region to films by and about Asian Americans primarily through an annual film festival as well as year round events.

Volunteer Needs: As a volunteer run organization, PAAFF relies on its dedicated staff volunteers to carry out its mission. Visit www.paaff.org or email Volunteer Coordinator Suan Tan at [email protected] for more details about getting involved. Upcoming opportunities include the Asian Pacific American Heritage Celebration on Sat May 9 from 1-9, which will feature all day music and dance performances, a theater program, and short film showcase. PAAFF will need extra hands to staff their information table, as well as to assist with setup and clean up. Additionally, they always have need for volunteers, either on site, or with more substantial staff roles.

Facebook | Twitter (KivaZip) | Twitter (PHLCommerce)

KivaZip.org is a program that was launched in 2011 by the non-profit Kiva. Kiva Zip enables small businesses to access 0% interest, no fee, crowd-funded micro-loans based on character and trustworthiness, rather than credit score and collateral. All of the loans are crowd-funded from lenders all over the world who act as business advisors, supporters, and even customers to the business owners. In December of 2014, Kiva Zip in partnership with the City of Philadelphia's Commerce Department, launched Kiva City Philadelphia, in order to help more Philadelphia small businesses access capital. The Kiva City program aids in the growth of loan volume in the area by having an on the ground person, and raising matching funds for all Philadelphia loans. To date, Kiva City Philadelphia has assisted 46 businesses, for almost $200,000. The businesses range from fashion designers, to candle makers, to music producers - yet all the businesses have one thing in common - the growth of their businesses contribute to the economic development of our city.

Kensington Community Food Co-Op
Facebook | Twitter

The Kensington Community Food Co-op is a member-owned grocery store coming to Kensington.

Volunteer Needs: Every 4th Tuesday they hold a Marketplace in Fishtown from 6-8pm where volunteers can help cashier or distribute bulk food. Marketplace also needs Visual Basic and Excel Coders on a short-term basis to help upgrade their spreadsheets. For interested volunteers with social media skills and an interest in where your food comes from, consider joining KCFC's Marketing Committee, which meets every 3rd Wednesday from 7-9pm for a dinner/brainstorming session on social media strategies to support the co-op. To plug in to KCFC, contact Kat Taylor at [email protected].

Veterans Multi-Service Center
Facebook | Twitter

The Veterans Multi-Service Center (VMC) is the only non-profit agency in Philadelphia and surrounding regions that provides a comprehensive resource center available to all veterans in need.

Volunteer Needs: Volunteers are needed to literally serve those who served! Volunteers can also provide a meal and facilitate an activity (like Bingo or card games) for local veterans at our day drop-in center, the Perimeter.

The Perimeter, plays a critical role in supporting our veterans. At the Perimeter VMC meets basic, immediate needs (food, clothing, etc.) of veterans experiencing homelessness or transitioning out of homelessness while offering case management to provide the greatest opportunity for personal advancement. VMC offers programming and activities to engage veterans to keep them coming back to a supportive environment until they are self-sustaining, and create as a safe space to connect and build comradery.

VMC typically asks for small groups of 5-10 volunteers at a time. YIP Volunteers can sign up here: http://bit.ly/YIPatVMC or at the Happy Hour! All volunteers will receive email confirmation verifying the date/time you are scheduled for.
